About Maurice Prendergast
Maurice Prendergast was born in St. John's, Newfoundland, in October 1858 and grew up in Boston, where he worked as a commercial artist until he could afford to study in Paris in 1891. There he absorbed Whistler, the Nabis and Japanese prints, and on a trip to Venice in 1898 painted the watercolours of crowds under umbrellas on the Piazza and bridges that made his name. Back in Boston he painted parks, beaches and promenades as mosaics of dabbed colour, and in 1908 he exhibited with The Eight in New York, the odd man out among the Ashcan realists. His late oils of figures in parks are flat tapestries of colour that anticipate American modernism. He died in New York in February 1924. His crowded, festive scenes print as decorative colour for a hallway, dining room or child's room.
