Three tall red flagstaffs with Italian flags rise in front of St Mark's in Venice, with crowds and pigeons in the square and the Doge's Palace and the lagoon beyond. Prendergast painted it in watercolour during his stay in Venice in 1898–99, cutting the flagpoles off at the top of the sheet like a Japanese print. It is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A bright Venetian watercolour in red, green and cream for a hallway, study or living room in a thin black frame. It suits white walls and pairs with Sargent's Venetian Canal.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
