A woman in black mourning stands alone at the water's edge, head bowed, as small waves break. Above her, on a rocky headland, a villa with a columned loggia and white statues is half hidden by tall cypresses and windblown trees under a flat grey sky. Böcklin painted a first version for his patron Count Adolf Friedrich von Schack in 1864, coating it with wax; when Schack found it damaged he asked for a new picture in oil, and Böcklin finished this second version in 1865. Both hang in the Schack Collection in Munich. Böcklin hinted that the woman might be the last of an old family.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Dark cypresses, a grey sea and a lone figure in black give a melancholy picture for a study, library or hallway with dark green walls. Pair it with Friedrich's Moonrise over the Sea and hang this one at 24×16 in a dark wood frame.
