Villagers walk out to the hay meadows in early summer: three women with rakes over their shoulders stride along a track, figures carry baskets of fresh produce on their heads, a mower sharpens his scythe at the lower left, and hay is pitched onto a cart in the field beyond, below a wide river valley and jagged rocks. Bruegel painted the panel in Antwerp in 1565 as one of six pictures of the times of the year for the merchant Nicolaes Jonghelinck; it stands for June and July. In 1594 the city of Antwerp gave the series to Archduke Ernst, and it is believed to have passed to Emperor Rudolf II the following year, but by 1659 only five panels were listed in Vienna. When this one left the imperial collection is not known, nor when the Lobkowicz family acquired it; it is first recorded as theirs in 1870. Scanned with the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, it hangs in the Lobkowicz Palace at Prague Castle.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 32×24. Prints at 16×12, 24×18, 32×24 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard; 32×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
