Hersilia throws herself between her husband Romulus, on the right with his spear, and her father Tatius, king of the Sabines, as the women of Rome, carried off years earlier and now wives and mothers, rush with their children between the two armies to stop the battle. David painted the picture between 1796 and 1799, partly in prison after the fall of Robespierre and partly as a plea for reconciliation among the French; he exhibited it himself for an entrance fee, a novelty that paid for his house, and the show ran for five years. The warriors are nude in the manner of Greek vases and sculpture, a deliberate return to the purest antique style, and the Capitoline fortress rises behind them. The Louvre acquired the painting from David's estate in 1819.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
