A concubine of an Ottoman harem lies naked on blue silk cushions with her back to the viewer and looks over her shoulder, a turban on her head, a peacock-feather fan in her hand and a pipe and incense burner at her feet. Ingres painted it in Rome in 1814 for Caroline Murat, Napoleon's sister and queen of Naples, as a pendant to a sleeping nude; the kingdom fell before it was delivered. Shown at the Salon of 1819, it was attacked for its anatomy, the famous back with three vertebrae too many, the boneless arm and the small head, distortions Ingres chose for the sake of the line. The Louvre bought it in 1899. It is the painting in which the classical nude turned into the Orientalist one, and the most elegant distortion in French art.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
