On the bank of the wide blue Chikuma River, three men in short coats and loincloths walk past boats drawn up at the water's edge, one wrapped in a straw cape and hat. At the right, a great tree shades a thatched teahouse, where porters sit at benches and eat under a reed awning. Dark green woods and grey mountains line the far shore under an orange and red sky. This is print twenty-four of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Shionada was the twenty-third station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
