The cathedral spire rising beyond the trees and water-meadows of Lower Marsh Close, a quieter and less formal view than the famous ones from the bishop's garden. Constable painted it in 1820, during one of his visits to his friend John Fisher, the bishop's nephew, whose family connections made Salisbury a recurring subject second only to his native Stour valley. Unlike his larger views of the cathedral, this one was never sold in his lifetime: it remained in his studio and was dispersed at the posthumous sale of his works in 1838, going to the collector William Hooker Carpenter. It later belonged to Sir John Kelk and passed through Agnew's in 1899 before crossing to America. The painting entered the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1937.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A spire beyond trees and water-meadows, the quieter Salisbury view, for a bedroom, study or landing at 24×18 or 32×24 in black or natural wood. A sage, cream or pale grey wall; it sits well with the two other Salisbury pictures.
