Three horsemen gallop along a winding riverside path at dawn, their cloaks flying, past a twisted pine and a wooden building at the right. Across the river and marshes, Mount Fuji glows red in the early light on the horizon. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). Sekiya was a village on the Sumida River north-east of Edo. The galloping horses and flowing cloaks give the scene a strong sense of speed and urgency; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
