Dense, overlapping clusters of colour and line fill a canvas three metres wide: a dark knot of black contours sits left of centre, ringed by swirls of blue, crimson, yellow and green, while paler washes of pink and ochre open out toward the lower right. Nothing is fully recognisable, though art historians have read in it themes Kandinsky had worked through for years: the Resurrection, the Last Judgement, the Flood and the Garden of Eden. He painted it in Munich in 1913 after an unusually long run of preparatory drawings, watercolours and oil studies, and it is generally considered the most complex picture he made before the First World War. It marks the high point of his Blue Rider years, when he argued that colour and form could act on the viewer as directly as music. The canvas is in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A crowded storm of crimson, cobalt, yellow and green swirling around a black knot, for a living room, open-plan space or large hallway at 36×24 in black. A white or warm grey wall keeps it legible; it pairs with Yellow-Red-Blue.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
