Sharp black diagonals cross a white ground like the strokes of an X, and around them float triangles, wedges and arcs in yellow, red, ochre, blue and olive, with small checkerboards, a target-like disc and a scalloped black band. The white is not empty background but part of the structure, giving the forms room to collide. Kandinsky painted it in 1923, while he was teaching at the Bauhaus in Weimar, and it shows how far his work had moved from the loose, cloud-like colour of the Munich years toward precise geometry. The picture later hung in the dining room of Wassily and Nina Kandinsky's apartment at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Nina Kandinsky gave it to the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris in 1976, and it is in the collection of the Centre Pompidou.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Crisp black diagonals and bright red, yellow and blue wedges on a white ground, for a home office, study or teenager's room at 24×36 in black. A white or pale grey wall suits it best; it pairs with Circles in a Circle.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
