A red mill wheel turns at the left beside a tall white waterfall that pours down the centre of the canvas in streaming ribbons, and around it rise blue houses, green and red trees and small creatures, including one drinking at the foot of the falls. Colour is broken into prismatic planes that make the water seem to shimmer. Marc painted it in 1913, the year of his most ambitious animal and landscape pictures, when the influence of Robert Delaunay's Orphism was at its strongest in his work. The mill and waterfall turn a simple rural motif into an enchanted scene. Arthur Jerome Eddy of Chicago bought it from the artist in 1914, and after his death his widow and son gave it to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1931.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
