A dark, tree-covered hill fills the centre under a deep blue sky, with a church tower rising at the left and a few pale clouds scattered above; across the foreground runs a road in hot red and yellow. The colours are flat, unblended and far from natural, and the forms are simplified into patches. Kandinsky painted it on cardboard in 1908 in Murnau, a market town in the Bavarian foothills where he and Gabriele Münter worked that summer alongside Alexej von Jawlensky and Marianne von Werefkin. The Murnau pictures, with their saturated colour and dark outlines, mark the point at which Kandinsky left behind his earlier Russian fairy-tale scenes and began to free colour from description, the step that led to the abstraction of 1910 to 1913. Nina Kandinsky gave the painting to the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris in 1976.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18, 32×24 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard; 32×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
