A woman lies on a red couch with her arms raised behind her head and her eyes half closed, her long body painted in a single warm ochre against a dark red blanket and a white pillow, her face reduced to the almond eyes and small mouth of all Modigliani's sitters. It belongs to the series of about thirty nudes he painted in Paris in 1916 and 1917 for his dealer Léopold Zborowski, whose exhibition at the Berthe Weill gallery in December 1917 was closed by the police on its opening day for indecency; the directness of the gaze and the visible body hair were the offence. The painting passed through the collection of the Turin industrialist Riccardo Gualino and was sold at Christie's in New York in 2015 for 170 million dollars to the Shanghai collector Liu Yiqian, who shows it at his Long Museum.

This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A long reclining nude in warm ochre against red and white, a wide painting for a bedroom or dressing room at 24×16 in black. Deep red, charcoal or warm grey walls suit it; pair it with the Met's Reclining Nude.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
Very slightly cropped. This full-bleed edition prints the painting edge to edge, so a thin sliver, a few percent at most, is trimmed from two opposite edges to fit the print size. We only offer it on paintings whose proportions already come that close to the sheet. For the whole painting, uncropped, choose the gallery edition.
Is Nu couché (Reclining Nude) in the public domain?
Yes. Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Private collection (Long Museum.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 18×12 and 24×16 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Nu couché (Reclining Nude) painted, and in what medium?
Nu couché (Reclining Nude) dates from 1917 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 60 × 92 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×16 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 18×12 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Nu couché (Reclining Nude) we'd choose 24×16. It is a landscape print, wider than it is tall, at the painting's own proportions.
