Roses, convolvulus, poppies and a tangle of other blooms rise in a loose pyramid from an urn set on a stone ledge, lit from the front so that the central flowers glow against a dark ground with a hint of architecture behind. Rachel Ruysch painted every grain of pollen inside the open flowers and let insects settle on petals and curling leaves that are just beginning to brown. It is an early work, from the 1680s, when she was in her twenties and already selling to collectors; she went on to a career of nearly seventy years. Some see vanitas symbols in the fading leaves and the insects, but the museum reads them as plain observation of living things rather than a sermon on decay. It came to the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington in 1986 as a gift from Wallace and Wilhelmina Holladay, the museum's founders.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The image fills the print at the painting's own proportions; nothing is trimmed to fit a frame.
Is Roses, Convolvulus, Poppies and Other Flowers in an Urn on a Stone Ledge in the public domain?
Yes. Rachel Ruysch (1664–1750) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by National Museum of Women in the Arts.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Roses, Convolvulus, Poppies and Other Flowers in an Urn on a Stone Ledge painted, and in what medium?
Roses, Convolvulus, Poppies and Other Flowers in an Urn on a Stone Ledge dates from c. 1688 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 42.5 × 33 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
