This bouquet is past its best. The blue iris at the top right hangs withered, the tulip on the left is about to shed its first petal, and from the middle of the arrangement an overblown flower, probably a red opium poppy, has just been cut away, leaving a gap and a stem that still drips onto the leaves below. The gap gives the picture an unusual depth, with the white roses and calendula at the bottom in full light and the upper flowers receding into shade. Rachel Ruysch painted it in 1700. The daughter of the Amsterdam anatomist and botanist Frederik Ruysch, she trained from the age of fifteen with Willem van Aelst, served as court painter to the Elector Palatine in Düsseldorf, raised ten children and was still painting at eighty-four. It is inventory number 151 at the Mauritshuis in The Hague, where it hangs in Room 11.
