A bouquet in a glass bowl stands on a marble-topped table against a near-black ground, lit from the left: two full white roses at the centre, a flamed yellow parrot tulip, carnations hanging over the table edge, a blue lupin, lilies with curled-back petals, a striped anemone, three dark tulips, cornflowers, and at the top a tall fringed poppy with a white, red-edged bloom. Morning glory trails down at the right. It is signed Rach. Ruysch on the edge of the table. The painting belongs to the Hallwyl Museum in Stockholm, the former town house of the von Hallwyl family, whose collection was catalogued in 1930; the museum calls it simply Flower-piece. Rachel Ruysch, daughter of the Amsterdam anatomist Frederik Ruysch, was the most celebrated flower painter of her day and worked into her eighties, and this canvas shows her mature way of letting each flower keep its own light and shape within a crowded arrangement.
