A dark wooden torii stands in the foreground, and beside it a line of travellers with staffs walks toward a small bridge over a bright blue river into the town. Beyond the roofs, the buildings of Yugyō Temple rise among dense trees on a hill, reached by a long flight of steps, under a sky warmed with orange. The print is number seven in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Fujisawa, the sixth station, was a temple town around Yugyō-ji, head temple of the Ji school of Buddhism, and the torii marked the road to the shrine on the island of Enoshima; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
