A raised path zigzags across flooded rice fields, and on it a courier runs one way with a box on his back while a porter shoulders an empty palanquin the other. Behind them the rounded, dark green dome of Mount Kōrai fills the middle of the picture, with a small white Fuji peeping out beside it and a red band of sky along the top. The print is number eight in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Hiratsuka was the seventh station, on the flat coastal land of Sagami Province, and the nawate of the title is a raised path running between rice fields; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
