Snow falls thickly over a mountain road, and a small group of travellers walks away from us between snow-covered hills, their round hats and straw capes heaped white. One rides a dark red horse, a figure in red and yellow walks beside it, and another follows behind. At each side a pine with a red-streaked trunk bends under clumps of snow against a dark grey sky full of flakes. This is print forty-seven of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Ōi was the forty-sixth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
