A daimyo's procession crosses a long wooden bridge on crossed timber piers, the retainers in straw hats strung out along its curving span over the river. Beyond the far end, the white walls and roofs of Okazaki Castle rise above the town, with reeds along the bank and blue mountains behind under a pale pink sky. The print is number thirty-nine in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Okazaki, the thirty-eighth station, was the castle town where Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the shogunate, was born, and the Yahagi Bridge was among the longest on the whole road; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
