Workmen on bamboo scaffolding repair a castle in the right foreground, one climbing high up a pole, while below them the long Toyokawa Bridge runs out across the deep blue river on wooden piers. Boats drift on the water, and beyond the far bank lie reeds, rooftops and a low mountain under a pale sky. The print is number thirty-five in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Yoshida, the thirty-fourth station and now the city of Toyohashi, was a castle town on the Toyokawa River in Mikawa Province, and its bridge was one of the long spans of the route; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
