- Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
Two large cargo ships with red-brown hulls sail across a calm sea, their white sails filled with wind and decks stacked with goods. Far away on the horizon, a tiny Mount Fuji appears beneath the sail. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). Kazusa province lay across Edo Bay, and coastal cargo ships like these carried goods to and from the city. The great ship dwarfs the distant mountain, one of Hokusai's favourite plays of scale; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
