A young woman in a violet-blue blouse sits with her head bowed over a folded white fan held in her hands, wearing a large hat in blue, green and red, all set against a flat orange-red background. Dark outlines enclose the forms, and the colours are laid on in broad, unmixed patches. Jawlensky painted it in 1909, the year after the first summer in Murnau with Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter and Marianne von Werefkin, and the year they founded the New Artists' Association of Munich. The picture shows his debt to Gauguin and the Fauves and his own leaning toward strong, almost iconic colour. Jawlensky lived in Wiesbaden from 1921 until his death in 1941, and the Museum Wiesbaden holds one of the largest collections of his work.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
