An ornamental silver ewer with a lid stands beside a Chinese porcelain bowl of lemons and oranges, a roemer of white wine held in a silver cup-holder, and a pocket watch, all emerging from darkness on a marble ledge draped with a carpet. Willem Kalf painted it around 1655 to 1660, soon after settling in Amsterdam, and it is a textbook example of the pronk still life, the display piece of costly objects that he made his own. He chose rare Asian wares rather than the common export porcelain of the day and sometimes invented hybrids: the Rijksmuseum notes that the decoration inside this bowl belongs to an earlier type of flat-rimmed klapmuts while the outside follows a contemporary pattern. Light on silver, glass, peel and glaze is the whole subject. The museum bought it at the sale of Albertus Jonas Brandt's collection in Amsterdam on 29 October 1821.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
