Rectangles of deep red, plum, green, teal, ochre and black fit together in an irregular grid, some flat, some shaded, with small dark fir trees drawn inside a few of them and Klee's signature at the left. The pairs of complementary colours in the title, red against green and violet against yellow, set up a beat across the surface. Klee painted it on cardboard in 1920, the year he was invited to join the Bauhaus, and it belongs to the colour-block pictures that grew out of his 1914 journey to Tunisia. The tiny trees keep a trace of landscape inside what is otherwise close to pure abstraction. The work is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, part of the Berggruen Klee Collection given in 1984.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
