Two large white dogs move across a field of snow from left to right, their pale bodies painted in creamy yellows and whites with soft blue shadows, so that they almost dissolve into the snow around them; a few brown branches cross the foreground. Marc painted it in 1909–10, just before he arrived at his symbolic colour, and the picture shows his earlier, Impressionist-influenced handling, with the animals observed from life. It was bought around 1910 through the Munich dealer Brakl by the physicist Ludwig Hopf and his wife Alice, who were forced to leave Germany in 1939 because of Nazi persecution and took it with them to Britain and Ireland. Stephen Kellen bought it from the family in 1958, and he and his wife gave it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1983.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
