A large red square fills the upper right of the canvas, balanced by a small blue square at the lower left and a sliver of yellow at the lower right, the rest white, all divided by black lines of varying thickness. Mondrian painted it in Paris in 1930, the year his neo-plastic style reached its most reduced form; the lines stop short of the edge in places, the bands differ in width and the white is not one white but several, so that a composition that looks like a diagram is in fact full of adjustment. It is the picture most often meant when people speak of a Mondrian, the source of the Yves Saint Laurent dress and of countless imitations. It belongs to the Kunsthaus Zürich.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A big red square, a small blue one and a sliver of yellow on white in black bars, the classic Mondrian, for a living room, office or hallway at 24×36 in black. White, pale grey or charcoal walls keep it crisp; pair it with Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue from Cleveland.
