A tall grid of soft-cornered rectangles in pale pink, grey, ochre and blue is drawn in black lines that thin out toward the edges, leaving the structure floating in a grey-white field. A few rounded ends at the bottom recall arches or windows. Mondrian painted it in Paris in 1914, shortly before the outbreak of war, at the end of his Cubist period, when he was working from the facades and scaffolding of buildings around his studio. The motif has disappeared into horizontals and verticals, but its rhythm is still the rhythm of walls and windows. The muted colour and open, fading edge set it apart from the hard grids he would reach after 1920. It is in the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, which holds the largest collection of his work.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
