A wide field of yellow floods the canvas; at upper right a large black shape tilts into it, and along the left side a crowd of quick strokes in white, blue, red and black suggests rows of listeners. The black form is usually read as a grand piano and the yellow as the sound filling the hall. Kandinsky painted it in January 1911, days after he, Franz Marc and friends heard a concert in Munich of music by Arnold Schoenberg, including works in which the composer had abandoned traditional harmony. Kandinsky wrote to Schoenberg soon afterwards, beginning a long friendship. The picture belongs to his series of Impressions, which he described as pictures that still drew directly on outward nature, here the experience of a performance. It was in Gabriele Münter's collection and came to the Lenbachhaus in Munich with her gift of 1957.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
