A black cross with a long upright stands over a large red oval on a pale ground, and a thin black bar slants beneath it at lower left. The forms are flat and hard-edged, and the cross seems to hover in front of the oval rather than rest on it. Malevich painted it between 1920 and 1922, in the later years of Suprematism, when he was teaching in Vitebsk and his writings increasingly treated the movement as a spiritual and philosophical system; the cross, which he had already used in 1915, became one of its central forms. The title Mystic Suprematism belongs to a small group of works from these years in which the cross is set against a coloured field. The painting is in a private collection.
