Water Lilies (Nymphéas)

A nearly square canvas from the group of water-lily paintings Monet made between 1903 and 1908, when the pond at Giverny had become his only subject. There is no bank, sky or horizon: the whole picture is the surface of the water, with clusters of lilies drifting across the reflections. Monet had bought the Giverny property in 1890 and dug the water garden three years later; he went on to paint it roughly 250 times. This 1906 version sits at the midpoint of that journey, after the straightforward views of the Japanese bridge and before the vast, near-abstract panels he prepared for the Orangerie in Paris. It is signed and dated at the lower right and came to the Art Institute of Chicago with the collection of Martin A. Ryerson. Its loosened brushwork, where strokes of violet and green sit side by side without blending, is why the late Monet is read as a bridge to abstraction.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The image fills the print at the painting's own proportions; nothing is trimmed to fit a frame.
Is Water Lilies (1906) in the public domain?
Yes. Claude Monet (1840–1926) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Art Institute of Chicago.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Water Lilies (1906) painted, and in what medium?
Water Lilies (1906) dates from 1906 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 89.9 × 94.1 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
