A two-metre-wide stretch of Monet's pond at Giverny, painted in 1919 when the artist was nearly eighty. Lilies in full flower, their yellow centres ringed with purple, sit on water that holds the reflected colours of trees and sky; there is no bank and no horizon. Monet was by then deep in the huge decorative panels for the Orangerie and reluctant to let recent work go, but he made this canvas and three related pictures with the market in mind, telling his dealers Gaston and Josse Bernheim that he was working on them passionately. The brothers bought all four. This one came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art through Walter and Leonore Annenberg. The American abstract painter Ellsworth Kelly singled it out as a late Monet that pulls attention to the surface of the paint itself.
