A young woman in a deep blue dress and red hat sits on the terrace of the Restaurant Fournaise at Chatou, a small girl in a flowered bonnet beside her and a basket of coloured wool on the rail. Renoir painted it in the spring of 1881 at the riverside spot he loved for its good company away from Paris, shortly after finishing Luncheon of the Boating Party there; it is among the last of his pictures set at Fournaise. The elder sister was posed by Jeanne Darlot, an eighteen-year-old who later became an actress, and the models were not actually related. Renoir called it Two Sisters; his dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, who bought it in July 1881 for 1,500 francs, preferred On the Terrace. It was shown at the seventh Impressionist exhibition in 1882 and has hung in the Art Institute of Chicago since 1933.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is Two Sisters (On the Terrace) in the public domain?
Yes. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Art Institute of Chicago.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Two Sisters (On the Terrace) painted, and in what medium?
Two Sisters (On the Terrace) dates from 1881 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 100.4 × 80.9 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
