Four vessels stand in a row on a ledge against blackness: a pewter plate with a cup, a glazed earthenware jar, a red clay jug and a brass dish, each separated by a little dark space and lit from the left so that the glazes, metal and fired clay answer the light differently. Nothing happens; the objects simply are. Zurbarán, the painter of austere monks and saints for the monasteries of Seville and Extremadura, made very few independent still lifes, and this one, dated to about 1650, has become a touchstone for the Spanish bodegón: the ordinary made solemn. The museum in Barcelona notes how its silence and stillness anticipate the stripped-down compositions of twentieth-century art, and Morandi is often invoked beside it. A closely related version belongs to the Prado. This canvas, under eighty centimetres wide, is in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
