A young woman in a green silk cloak over rich brocade, a golden crown on her head, stands against a dark ground holding the attributes of Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia, the thirteenth-century Hungarian princess who gave her wealth to the poor and whose bread, according to legend, turned to roses when her husband caught her carrying it out of the castle. Zurbarán painted a whole series of these standing female saints in the finery of Seville's own ladies, which made them popular as a kind of devotional fashion plate; this one dates from about 1635 to 1640, the decade of his greatest commissions for the Andalusian monasteries. The canvas belongs to the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, where it has been since 1919, when the Provincial Council of Bizkaia placed it there. It lent its colour and poise to the recent international Zurbarán exhibition that drew on the Bilbao collection.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
