About Pierre Bonnard

Pierre Bonnard was born at Fontenay-aux-Roses, outside Paris, in October 1867, studied law to please his father and painting at the Académie Julian, where he met Sérusier, Denis, Vuillard and Ranson and joined them in the group that called itself the Nabis, the prophets, after Gauguin's flat colour and Japanese prints. His first poster, France-Champagne, designed in 1889 and printed in 1891, with its foaming girl drawn in a single ochre and its lettering made part of the picture, was the first poster of the new painting, and it was this sheet that persuaded Toulouse-Lautrec, whom Bonnard took to the printer Ancourt, to make posters himself. Bonnard made few more, La Revue Blanche in 1894, the Salon des Cent and L'Estampe et l'Affiche in 1896 and 1897, each drawn in a loose lithographic crayon with hand-made letters, and turned to painting, to the interiors, gardens and bathrooms of his companion Marthe that occupied him for fifty years. He died at Le Cannet, above Cannes, in January 1947.
