A young woman in a loose dress stands with a small dog, her figure drawn in a few strokes of red and black on the bare cream sheet, under the lettering Salon des Cent, 23e exposition d'ensemble, 31 rue Bonaparte, août–septembre 1896. Bonnard designed the poster in 1896 for the group exhibition at the gallery of the magazine La Plume, and it is as sparse as a Japanese print, the paper left empty around the figure. Printed by Chaix, Paris. The impression reproduced is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A few strokes of red and black on cream, light and spare, for a bedroom, hallway or study at 18×24 or 24×32 in thin black, no mat. It suits a white or cream wall and pairs with Mucha's Salon des Cent poster.
