A laughing young woman with a glass of champagne, her dress and hair dissolving into foam, fills the upper half of the sheet, the lettering France-Champagne curling above her and the name of the proprietor E. Debray below. Bonnard designed the poster in 1889 and it was printed in 1891 for the champagne merchant Debray of Reims; it was his first poster, made when he was twenty-two, and it convinced Toulouse-Lautrec to try the medium. The single ochre colour, the flat planes and the lettering drawn as part of the picture make it the first poster of the Nabis. Printed by Edw. Ancourt, Paris. The impression reproduced is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
