A young woman with long dark hair plays the violin in front of a screen of slender orange tree trunks, her eyes raised, above a lettered band advertising lessons in violin, cello and solfège. Paul Berthon designed it in 1898 as a small advertisement for a music teacher on the rue Denfert-Rochereau in Paris. The flat ochres and the decorative trees are typical of his Art Nouveau style. This is plate 175 of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, printed by Chaix in 1899.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Ochre, rust and cream in a wide format, for a music room, study or over a piano at 16×12 or 24×18 in thin black or dark wood, no mat. It warms a white or sage wall and pairs with Berthon's L'Ermitage.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×12. Prints at 16×12, 24×18 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
