Rivermen play cards on a raft drifting down the Mississippi, while others watch and one poles the raft along under a hazy sky. Bingham arranged his figures in a pyramid like a classical group, giving a homely subject the gravity of history painting. It is in the Saint Louis Art Museum.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A warm river scene for a den, games room or study in a dark wood frame. It suits warm white or deep green walls and is a gift for a card player.
