Voters crowd the steps of a Missouri courthouse on election day, arguing, drinking cider, taking the oath and being canvassed by candidates, while a drunk is carried up to vote. Bingham, himself a Missouri politician, painted it as a good-humoured portrait of frontier democracy, and it was engraved and sold by subscription. This version is in the Saint Louis Art Museum.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
