A French trader in a red cap and his son lean on a bundle of furs in a dugout canoe gliding down the Missouri River in the morning mist, a chained black animal, perhaps a fox cub, sitting in the bow. Bingham sent it to the American Art-Union in New York in 1845 under the title French-Trader, Half-breed Son, and its still, golden light makes it one of the best-known images of the American frontier. It is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
