A grinning satyr, crowned with vine leaves and grapes, bursts through the giant red letters of the title, with the price, 6d, set beside him. Jules Chéret designed the poster for Pan, a London weekly 'journal of satire' edited by Alfred Thompson from offices in Ludgate Buildings; it is one of the few posters he lettered in English. This impression is the reduced plate 81 of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, printed by Chaix in Paris in 1897. The bold black-shadowed lettering is as much the picture as the figure.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Red lettering and a laughing satyr on cream, for a study, bar corner or home library at 16×24 or 24×36 in thin black, no mat. It brings wit to a dark green or navy wall and pairs with Chéret's Courrier Français.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
