A Paris street crowded with people of every class: a laundress with her basket, a workman, a girl in a red dress, a nurse with a pram, a woman in a feathered hat, children and a dog, all moving across the sheet under the lettering Affiches Charles Verneau, La Rue. Steinlen designed the enormous poster in 1896 for his own printer, Charles Verneau, as a demonstration of what the firm could print; at more than three metres wide it was made in six sheets. The models are his wife, his daughter Colette and his neighbours in Montmartre, and it is the fullest picture he made of the streets he drew all his life. The impression reproduced is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A wide street crowd in ochre, red and grey, for a hallway, living room or above a sofa at 24×18 or 32×24 in thin black or dark wood, no mat. It suits a white or warm grey wall and pairs with Toulouse-Lautrec's L'Aube.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18, 32×24 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard; 32×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
