Around a central target of concentric rings in rainbow colours, two figures are caught mid-action: at left a dark-clad man falls backward, and at right a woman in red and blue raises a pistol, while the name Robert Delaunay is lettered across the bottom of the sheet. The scene is the shooting on 16 March 1914 of Gaston Calmette, editor of Le Figaro, by Henriette Caillaux, wife of the former prime minister and finance minister Joseph Caillaux, after the paper had attacked her husband. Delaunay is thought to have taken the figures from a newspaper illustration of the event and set them inside one of his simultaneous discs, joining a news story to abstract colour. It is painted in oil with collage on cardboard. Sonia Delaunay kept it until at least 1956; the New York collector Joseph H. Hazen and his wife bought it in 1957, and the Joseph H. Hazen Foundation gave it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1971.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
