About this work

Year
1909–10
Medium
Oil on canvas
Original size

Collection

Movement
Cubism

The ambulatory of a Gothic church opens before us, its slender columns and ribbed vaults in blue, green and white bending and swaying as if the building were breathing, while light from the stained-glass windows at the far end spreads in pale yellow and lilac across the floor. Delaunay painted it in 1909–10, one of a series of views of the church of Saint-Séverin in the Latin Quarter of Paris. Working from the same viewpoint again and again, he used the bending columns and the flooding light to break with fixed perspective, a step toward the fragmented Eiffel Tower pictures that followed. The subtitle, The Rainbow, points to the coloured light that would become his real subject. It is in the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

Swaying blue and green Gothic columns opening onto pale yellow light, for a hallway, staircase or study at 16×24 in black. A white, slate or soft blue wall; it pairs with Delaunay's Eiffel Tower.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.

Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).

Is Saint-Séverin No. 5 (The Rainbow) in the public domain?
Yes. Robert Delaunay (1885–1941) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Moderna Museet.
What is it printed on?

What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 16×24 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 12×18 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Saint-Séverin No. 5 (The Rainbow) we'd choose 16×24.
