At the edge of a town, men kneel and bow low beside the road as a daimyo's procession arrives, led by horses with tall plumes and retainers in wide straw hats carrying a lacquered box. A tall post and two notice boards stand by the stone wall, willows lean over the bank, and a small dog sits by the kneeling men. The print is number thirty-eight in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. The bōbana of the title is the post marking the entrance to a station town, here Fujikawa, the thirty-seventh station, where local officials came out to greet the lord at the boundary; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Soft greys and blues with willows and a pale evening sky, for a hallway, study or home office at 36×24 in natural wood. It pairs with Okazaki: Yahagi Bridge, the next station, where a procession crosses the river.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
