A road lined with old, twisting pines runs through rice fields, and along it a horse carries three young passengers in a three-seat saddle, led by a groom. A small red-tinted Fuji appears in the sky on the left and a pale mountain on the right, while other travellers walk the road ahead. The print is number fifteen in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. At Yoshiwara, the fourteenth station, the road curved inland so that Fuji, seen on the right for most of the westward journey, appeared on the traveller's left, which gave this pine avenue the name of the title; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
