- Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
Two boats with long hulls ride the rolling blue waves of Tago Bay, their rowers working at the oars, while a low shore of trees and huts stretches behind them. Above, Mount Fuji fills the upper part of the sheet, its dark blue slopes flecked with white snow above a band of mist. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). Tago Bay, near Ejiri on the Tōkaidō road, has been celebrated in poetry since ancient times for its view of the mountain. Here Fuji is large and close, an imposing presence over the boats; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Deep blue waves and a great snow-flecked Fuji over soft greens, for a living room, study or hallway at 24×16 in natural wood. It pairs with Ejiri in Suruga Province, its neighbour on the same road.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×16. Prints at 18×12, 24×16 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
